As I wrote about in my Mule Deer Hunt article, the .338 Lapua Magnum is complete overkill for close range. As I say, "Learning what not to do is a big part of the learning process", so I figured others can learn from my mistakes.
Be warned, there are plenty of graphic pictures ahead, click at your own risk if you are squeamish. Just last week I finished up my first Mule Deer hunt since 2002, and myself and my friend Martin were both successful in harvesting our deer (his, was much bigger than mine....in a totally heterosexual way of course). So here are some pictures from the trip, some insight, and some lessons learned! There will be some graphic pictures ahead, so do not click if you do not like seeing dead deer.
If you have been around me for any amount of time, you hear me say "Learning what not to do is a big part of the learning process.". And unfortunately, a lot of it has done at my own expense. After being around guns for over 20 years, I thought I would share some of the mistakes I have made, and what I now do to hopefully save others from doing the same thing that I did.
Once again, the Magical 250 did its job. My dad got this Antelope at approximately 300 yards using his trusty rifle loaded with a 55 Grain Hornady SP on top of 38 grains of Hodgdon H380. He said that after the shot the Antelope stumbled a few feet before falling victim to the legend that is the Magical 250. Note the proper Elko County hunting attire and lack of camouflage. Where I come from, this is how it is done!
EZ 30 and 42 round factory magazines for $19.99 each. Ready, set, break out your wallet! https://www.44mag.com/category/steyr Today, as I sat down to write, I found my mind could not focus. I found myself going off on random tangents like a lemur on bath salts, so what the hell, why not start posting some truly Random Gun Stuff? Maybe sometime in the near future I will expand upon one or more of these topics.
For a while now, my STI has been running pretty rough. Failures to feed and eject have been turning range sessions with it into a lesson in how to say lots of bad words in very creative different ways. Being a 1911 guy, you have to accept that you may have to work on your pistol, or have a smith work on it from time to time. So let's tear this piece of shit apart, and see what we can do!
I love ugly guns that can shoot, and my dads 22-250 is the picture of an ugly gun that can shoot. Mauser Long Action, unknown Stainless Steel barrel, Bushnell Sportview scope....and it hits everything you aim at. In a world full of pretty rifles without nay a scratch, there is something about an ugly rifle.
One of the things I have been asked quite a bit, and find myself thinking about is "What would I do if I had to start all over again with no guns?". After quite a bit of pondering, I have finally decided to put this down into words, and why I would do so.
