One cool thing about working at a gun store is getting to see the new guns to market and checking them out. Here, we will take a look at the new Savage MSR Patrol and Recon. First up is the MSR Patrol. I also stripped it down to show some of the technical aspects of it. Here is the quick and dirty.
The lower on the MSR Patrol is your pretty standard forged AR lower. The lower has a screw to provide tension for a tight fit between the upper and lower.
The handguard is made by Blackhawk and has M-LOK slots added in useful areas.
The MSR has a mid length gas system with Savages own FSB. The barrel is 1/8 twist, and the contour is as measured below.
The bolt carried group is properly staked, with the bolthead serialized to the firearm.
MSR Recon
The biggest difference with the Recon is the aluminum free float M-LOK handguard, and a slightly different lower receiver that is aesthetically pleasing.
Note the depressions behind the mag well to index your trigger finger.
The sites appear to be Savages own, with the rear site seeming like a cheap plastic copy of a Matech, it doesn't really impress me.
First impressions are that these seem to be well built guns. But can they compete in the already saturated AR market? Probably, lots of people know the Savage name, but only time will tell.
